By Robert H. Kelly

In an effort to streamline this particular blog, I am switching to a new posting schedule.

This will allow me to post information and statistics after the Houston Astros complete their weekend series.

In the future, all weekly postings will be done on Sunday evening.

Hunter Pence-The Week In Review June 7-13

By Robert Kelly

Hunter Pence's statistics suffered a bit this week as he sat out 2 games due to his injured left leg..

He did play five games, going 6 for 22 from the plate, with 2 runs, and a single RBI. His batting average dropped to .347 as a result of not playing two games.

Pence is showing solid play on defense while continuing to improve at the plate.

On mlb.com, writer Mychael Urban has an article entitles "Good for ball, bad for ball." He writes about some of the things he likes and dislikes about baseball. He has some good things to say about Hunter Pence. The clip about Pence is as follows:

The entire Minute Maid Park experience in Houston is worthy of one of these columns, from the Chik-fil-A signage -- "Eat Mor Fowl" -- besmirching the foul poles (Bad For Ball) to the Cranium Cam -- live bobbleheads, anyone? -- on the big screen between innings, it's a smorgasborg for the senses.

The most pleasing entrée, however, is the sight of rookie Hunter Pence digging out a triple off the base of Tal's Hill. Never mind he looks 14 years old and, in the words of Oakland's Nick Swisher, looks "like one of those guys you see in old movies about baseball in the 1940s." This kid can flat play, and he's a breath of fresh air for Houstonians disappointed by their 'Stros this season.

I cannot think of a better decription about Pence. As I have stated previously in my blogs and sports writings, "I just like this kid. He is what baseball should be about."

Pence Listed As Day To Day

By Robert H. Kelly

Houston Astros rookie outfielder Hunter Pence is listed as day to day due to an injury occurring in the Astros 5-2 win over the Chicago White Sox.

In the seventh inning, Pence injured his left leg while running out a routine grounder to first base.

He had previously struck out in his first two at bats but doubled and scored in the fifth inning.

Pence was quoted after the game:

I've pulled two of them before. When it tightens up like it did, and I try to ignore it and run through it, it pops really bad. So I learned whenever I do feel it, I can't run through it. We just have to get it loosened up again. It's just a cramp.

Pence has not been placed on the disabled list and did not play in the Astros 5-2 win over the White Sox today (June 9).

Hunter Pence-The Week In Review May 31-June 6

By Robert H. Kelly

Hunter Pence capped of the month of May by being named the National League Rookie of the Month.

For the month of may, he lead all National League rookies, with four home runs, had a .593 slugging percentage and a .372 on-base percentage in 28 games. He hit .343 with 11 runs, nine doubles, three triples and three steals.

Compare that to the American League of the Month for May, Dustin Pedroia

The Boston second baseman hit .415 with six doubles, two homers and nine RBIs.

Pence is clearly at the top of the list for a rookie's performance in Major League Baseball.

His statistics for May include going 12 for 25, with three runs, one home run, six RBIs , and two stolen bases.

If this keeps up, he will be named the Rookie of the Month again this season, in addition to the NL Rookie of the Year for the 2007 season.
